Itinerary

  • Day 1 Machame Hut Camp (5,380' to 9,350')

Our adventure begins with a drive to the Machame trailhead, where climbers and crew check in with park rangers. The hike starts through the lush montane forests, characterized by dense vegetation and towering trees. As we ascend, the forest transitions into mossy jungle, providing a mystical atmosphere as we make our way to Machame Hut camp.

    • Diverse flora of the montane forest, the excitement of beginning the climb, and setting up camp in the serene wilderness.
  • Day 2 Shira Plateau (9,350’ to 12,500’)

After a hearty breakfast, we continue our ascent through the forest, gradually emerging into the moorlands. The landscape opens up, offering spectacular views of Kibo peak. The trail is surrounded by unique vegetation, including giant groundsels and lobelias, adapted to the harsh mountain environment.

    • Transition from forest to moorland, panoramic views of Kibo peak, and the unique flora of the Shira Plateau.
  • Day 3 Barranco Camp (12,500’ to 13,044’)

Today is a challenging but rewarding day as we hike to Lava Tower (~15,190’) for acclimatization. The trail takes us through different climate zones, providing a variety of scenery. After lunch at Lava Tower, we descend to Barranco Valley, enjoying the dramatic landscapes and unique rock formations.

    • Acclimatization hike to Lava Tower, diverse climate zones, and the scenic Barranco Valley.
  • Day 4 Karanga Camp (13,044’ to 13,106’)

We tackle the steep Barranco Wall, a highlight for many climbers due to its challenging but non-technical ascent. The trail continues over ridges and valleys, offering stunning views and further opportunities for acclimatization. Karanga Camp is set in a beautiful location, perfect for an afternoon acclimatization hike.

    • Climbing the Barranco Wall, breathtaking views from the ridges, and a relaxing afternoon at Karanga Camp.
  • Day 5 Barafu Camp (13,106’ to 15,331)

We continue our trek towards Barafu Camp, the final camp before the summit push. The trail involves some ups and downs as we traverse ridges and valleys. Upon arrival at Barafu, we have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the midnight ascent to the summit.

The hike from Gilman's to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Horombo Hut. On the way down from the summit, you will see all of the magnificent views you could not see on the way up. Stop for a short break and snacks at Kibo Hut before continuing on to Horombo Hut.

    • Final preparations for the summit, scenic ridges and valleys, and resting at high altitude.
  • Day 6 Summit and Mweka Camp (19,341’)

The most challenging and rewarding day begins at midnight. Using headlamps, we hike slowly to Stella Point and then to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. The ascent is strenuous due to the altitude and cold, but the sunrise from the summit is an unforgettable experience. After celebrating at the summit, we descend to Mweka Camp, where we enjoy a well-deserved rest.

    • Reaching Uhuru Peak, breathtaking sunrise, and the sense of accomplishment upon descending to Mweka Camp.
  • Day 7 Mweka Park Gate to Arusha (10,500’ to 5,000’)

Our final descent takes us through the lush rain forest to Mweka Gate. After checking out, we share a farewell lunch with our mountain crew, reflecting on the incredible journey. A comfortable drive back to Arusha awaits, where you can enjoy a hot shower and a celebratory dinner.

    • Final descent through the rain forest, farewell lunch with the crew, and celebrating your achievement back in Arusha.
