Itinerary

  • Day 1 Hotel to Momella Gate (1500m) - Miriakamba Hut

After enjoying your breakfast, our team will arrange for your pickup from your hotel. Before setting off, we will conduct a comprehensive briefing regarding your Mount Meru ascent and inspect your equipment. The journey to Arusha National Park typically takes around an hour. Upon arrival, once your guide completes the necessary formalities at the park gate, the expedition proceeds to Momella Gate, which serves as the starting point for your trek.

During the drive to Momella Gate, you'll have the opportunity to observe remarkable wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, and a variety of other animals that call this park home. Due to the presence of abundant wildlife in the park, an armed park ranger will accompany you from Momella Gate onward.

The initial part of the trail leads you across the Ngare Nanyuki River, with a pleasant walk along the riverbanks, providing glimpses of buffalo herds, baboons, and other intriguing wildlife. Soon, your path will wind through the lush forest, and after approximately 2 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at the tranquil Mayo Falls. Here, a picturesque meadow offers an ideal spot for your picnic, allowing you to rejuvenate amidst the natural beauty.

Following a well-deserved break, your journey continues to the "Arched Fig Tree," a remarkable tree that forms a natural gateway across the trail. After another 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking, you'll reach your accommodation for the first night on Mount Meru, the Miriakamba Hut. This cozy hut nestled in the mountain's embrace provides a comfortable and peaceful setting for your overnight stay.

    • Dinner and overnight at the Camp.
  • Day 2 Miriakamba Hut (2514m) - Saddle Hut (3560m)

Following your breakfast, the trek proceeds through the dense forest adorned with mosses and beard lichens. After approximately 2-3 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at the remarkable Mngongo wa Tembo, also known as Elephant Ridge, situated at an altitude of roughly 3,200 meters. During this portion of the ascent, wooden steps are employed in certain areas due to the steep and slippery terrain.

From the vantage point of Elephant Ridge, you'll be treated to a magnificent panoramic view of the expansive and rugged crater landscape. After a brief rest to soak in the scenery, your journey continues onward to the Saddle Hut. As you approach the hut, you'll notice a transformation in the landscape, transitioning from the lush mountain rainforest to a lighter bushland.

Following a satisfying lunch, you'll have the option to take a detour to the summit of Little Mount Meru, which stands at an elevation of 3,820 meters. This additional 1-1.5-hour hike rewards you with a splendid vista extending across the national park, offering glimpses of Kilimanjaro in the distance. Returning to the hut, you'll enjoy a hearty dinner before retiring for the night. Tomorrow marks the eagerly anticipated summit day, and it begins with an early start!

    • Camping site for dinner and overnight.
  • Day 3 Saddle Hut (3560m) - Socialist Peak (4566m) - Miriakamba Hut (2514m)

After a brief pause for a small snack and a comforting hot beverage, your journey to the summit commences at approximately 2 o'clock in the early morning. Guided by the glow of your headlight, you'll ascend through the bushland terrain, making your way toward Rhino Point. As you progress, the trail becomes progressively more challenging, featuring segments that may involve relatively straightforward climbing.

Following the extended north ridge, your route proceeds toward the summit, and it's here that you'll arrive just around the time of sunrise. This magical moment, with the sun emerging behind the majestic Kilimanjaro and casting a warm, orange-red glow over the Meru plain, will swiftly erase any fatigue from the demanding ascent.

Upon beginning your descent, you'll make your way back to the Saddle Hut, where a satisfying lunch and a steaming hot drink await your arrival. Subsequently, your journey continues toward the Mirikamba Hut, with an estimated arrival in the early afternoon. Here, you can find a well-deserved rest and relish in the sense of accomplishment that accompanies reaching the summit.
